It’s up to the engineer to keep artifacts out of your work as well as monitor, manage and maintain volume level, pan position, compression and effects settings. While the talent/artist provides the heart and soul of the song both are important to the final production. I don’t think all vocalist understand how much control they have over the mix while they’re tracking. Some artists can sound brilliant on a four track cassette recorder where other artists although talented with range, power and lyrics can destroy a mix with poor voice control.
I like the vast majority of my fellow producer/engineers have literally been converted from analog to digital. With the advent of computers and music software it’s safe to say that the financial playing field is just about level. Although the learning curve and experience both are achievable some artist choose to focus on the creative aspect and leave the technicalities to someone they can trust with their project.
